A KINETIC CHRISTMAS: Jingle Tag
FROM LEAPING TO SKIPPING (4+)
IN A BLOG ABOUT MOVEMENT, LET'S TALK ABOUT STOPPING...
If you have little ones or are around little ones a lot, you know that one of the hardest things for them to do is stop. Their natural exuberance is a hindrance, of course, but so is their balance and body control. Stopping just doesn't come naturally to kids, but it's a lot of fun when you make it the object of the game.
So let's stop those kids in their reindeer tracks, shall we? Here are a few, fun, huff 'n puff games to try with a group of kids, indoors or (even better) outside!
It's time to go, but the reindeer are still playing games. Can you help Santa round up the reindeer?
In this game, each child plays a reindeer wearing his jingle bells. Give each child a bell and have them scatter. One child plays Santa. He chases the reindeer. When he tags a reindeer, the reindeer freezes in place. When all the reindeer are rounded up (and the room is quiet), pick another Santa and play again.
YOU'VE BEEN JINGLED!
This time, have the reindeer scatter (no bells this time) and give Santa a bell. When Santa "jingles" (tags) a reindeer, the reindeer freezes. Santa gives the bell to the reindeer to ring! (Note: Santa can put the bells in the reindeer's hand, or perhaps on his foot, or on his elbow, etc. Wherever Santa places the bell, the reindeer has to ring it that way!) Santa continues to "jingle" the reindeer until they're all jingled (tagged)!
And for all out merry mayhem, play You've Been Jingled! and add this rule…
When a reindeer is "jingled," he can be unjingled by another reindeer (tradition Freeze Tag rules). But in order to stay unjingled, the reindeer has to return the bell to the sleigh (home base)!
Have fun (and wear your earmuffs)!
Wishing you a happy, healthy, and active holiday season.
